Operation Battle of Haifa Street

The Battle of Haifa Street was a battle fought over three days for the control of Haifa Street, a two-mile-long street in downtown Baghdad, Iraq, pitting American and Iraqi Army forces against various insurgent forces.

Operation:

The Battle of Haifa Street began when US Forces went to remove a reported 27 bodies near Haifa Street, family members of an Iraqi police chief. Upon arrival, "hundreds" of insurgents started shooting from high-rises. Those not on the rooftop were unable to move due to the extreme insurgent sniper and machine-gun fire, it became so intense that Apache's, F-15s, Strykers, 1,000 Iraqi Army soldiers and more than a dozen Iraqi gun trucks were called in, making it some of the fiercest fighting in Baghdad seen in months.

With fighter jets providing cover, US Apaches fired Hellfire missiles at insurgent positions as the battle went on. The Battle of Haifa Street lasted for more than three days which resulted in the death of 20 Iraqi Forces and 103 insurgents killed, 26 captured.

On January 24th, US and Iraqi forces attempted again to capture Haifa Street, this time resulting in an additional 30 insurgents killed, 35 captured and one US death. A total of 138 killed in these two battles on the insurgent side, with 61 captured along with the original 20 Iraqi Forces killed and one US soldier. This was one of the few battles where the insurgents and the coalition troops fought each other 'face-to-face'.
